Tommy Clark is an interesting author. I think it would be safe to say that along with interesting, he is also one of the new boys making his mark on the literary world. I was asked to review his latest release Rogue's Phoenix Chronicles Book 1: Thieves and Kings. What did I expect? Well, I wasn't sure exactly. I know Tommy is a fine writer, but he is also working with a subject that has been written to death. The fantasy world of knights, kings and all things currently associated with role-playing video games has been a subject I have been asked to review a lot. I have turned down many of them, so why am I reviewing this one? Several reasons-- the first being that Tommy Clark can write and he writes with distinction. He makes the story his own. The second reason is that I think he has a long future ahead of him! I really do believe that he has one of the most interesting writing styles of today.So, what is the story about? Well, I can't tell you too much--Tommy would kill me if I gave the story away in a review-- but it revolves around two young squires who live for the excitement of becoming fully grown knights. How do they become knights? They have to impress the king, of course! So, they find a way to make that happen... The story then gets deeper and deeper....
No, I can't tell you anymore! However, I can tell you that this is a book you will enjoy reading. It has a winning formula of strong characters, great ideas, great structure and well thought out event milestones.
I also want to add a codicil to this review and tell you that sometimes when you read a book, especially one in the fantasy genre, it twists and turns to such a degree you forget what happened at the start. Thieves and Kings certainly contains those exciting twists and turns, but you never forget what happened to start the chain of events. It's a sure-fire winner in that respect, too.
One downer-- I wish I could see something Tommy authored outside of the fantasy realm, something like a noir or a thriller. I think he would mature his talents greatly if he wrote something with punch; but as a fantasy author I can't fault him, just encourage him to grow! I am looking forward to the second instalment in the Rogue's Phoenix Chronicles. Until then, I give this one five stars!
Now I need to go and chase down a copy of his other book Mental Health Day!

THIS BOOK IS THE BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD, WRITTEN BY THE BEST AUTHOR IN THE WORLD....PERIOD!!! I FREAKING LOVE THIS BOOK!
The book was a great read. It kept my attention from the first to the last page. The characters were interwoven into the story line brilliantly. Tommy Clark tells a great story! I look forward to reading more of his work.
First I have to say that I do not like fantasy fiction--like not even a little bit--so the main reason I give this book 5 stars is for the simple reason that it kept my attention from page 1 to the end. There were a few loose ends at the end of the book which kinda annoyed me BUT I know that the second book will be coming out around the holiday season 2013 so I'm hoping my questions will be answered then. The story is enjoyable, the characters are memorable. I would definitely recommend this book to any other self-titled "Fantasy Fiction Haters"!
I read a lot but have never until now read a self-published book. I was a bit fearful of it feeling overly amateur but was thrilled to find that it was actually well put together. I'm not a critic so I'll just break my personal preference down to a positive/negative.
On the positive side, the plot was put together very well. It was clearly laid down with plenty of connections scene to scene. I ran across no trailing ends that didn't feel like they'd be resolved in the next book. The world itself is cleverly conceived, paining me at how little is revealed until the middle. For all the players, the diversity of types was great. Most of the characters were your standard warrior/fighter/soldier types, but were far from clones.
Of the few problems I had, pacing was probably the one that I noticed the most. Its hard to fix this without making the book too big, but I often felt like I was being rushed from scene to scene. Though it was the most noticeable to me, this didn't ruin the experience at all. After that, a few of the characters seemed too arch-typed too me. I feel bad for admitting it, but Dylen was the one that I liked the least. He was overly eager and too "heroesque" to me. His biggest dilemma was he couldn't do enough for his prince or kingdom, hopefully his trials at the end will shape him into a better knight. On the other side, the princes were a great thrill to read, especially the Prince Killian on his journey.
Overall, I recommend the book to any reading this. The few hiccups you'll come across don't deter, and I can see spans of books spawning from the multiverse that Rogue's Pheonix exists in, and if enough people hear about it, a loyal following.
