Eastern Structures picks up where Contemporary Ghazals left off, publishing English-language examples of the Middle Eastern form, but now in addition to Korean sijo and Japanese forms such as haiku and tanka -- rendered exclusively in the 5-7-5 and 5-7-5-7-7 syllabic structures. Issue 1 features the poetry of Denver Butson, William Dennis, L J McDowall, Priscilla Lignori, Clark Strand and Bill West among others; and the critical essays of R W Watkins and Jim Wilson. Issue 2 is expected in early Autumn, and submissions of traditionally structured Asian poetry and relevant non-fiction are welcome and encouraged.

As a haiku poet, I am absolutely delighted that the editor of Eastern Structures has provided a warm welcome and a home for traditional 5-7-5 English-language haiku alongside other traditional forms of Eastern poetry. The editor, R.W. Watkins, states that its intention is to publish "faithful English-language examples of several major Asian verse forms," and he has done so very successfully.
Ghazals (a middle-Eastern/Indian lyrical poem) comprise the largest portion of poetry in this first issue. I was not familiar with ghazals prior to this and was very pleasantly surprised. The journal also features haiku (including a number of my own), tanka and a small number of Korean silo.
Besides the wonderful poetry, this issue contains an excellent introduction by R.W. Watkins. In it and in his essay "Dial 5-7-5 For Classicism In Defense of the Seventeen Syllable Haiku," Watkins makes a strong case for why the 5-7-5 syllabic form is vital to the health of haiku as we move forward. There is also an excellent article by Jim Wilson on tanka - "Cultivating English Language Tanka.” The writing in both of these essays is excellent, and the points made are thought-provoking and worth considering by anyone serious about haiku and tanka.
Given the general lack of interest in promoting and publishing 5-7-5 haiku by the majority of Western haiku journals, I am very grateful that R.W Watkins (with this first issue) "drew a line in the sand and declared a cultural ground zero in regards to the haiku, tanka and related forms in English." I wholeheartedly recommend this publication to anyone interested in the diverse forms of Eastern poetry and for anyone interested in traditional 5-7-5 haiku and 5-7-5-7-7 tanka.
If you are really interested in Asian poetry forms this is the book to avoid.
There is a lot of poetry packed into these 32, 8-1/2" X 11" pages and all of it is excellent. The ghazals are beautifully crafted, the haiku are seasonal and syllabic, and I hope my own contribution of tanka measure up to these other efforts. The editor, R. W. Watkins, is experienced with poetry publications and this shows in the careful layout; everything is readable and thoughtfully displayed. The essays focus on taking a formal approach to Eastern forms that have been transmitted to the anglosphere. In contrast to the widespread trend of subverting the formal syllabics of these eastern forms by using a free verse line when writing in English, Watkins and the other authors accept these formal parameters when writing in English. And the result is a demonstration of how effectively these formal parameters are in the English language.
If you are interested in a formal approach to Eastern forms in the English language, this is a rich resource. If you are new to the idea of taking a formal approach to these forms in English, this will demonstrate the efficacy of such an approach. If you write in these forms, this will be a great place for you to publish in the future. A pleasure to read, and at an excellent price, you owe yourself a copy of the first issue of this fine publication.
